Emmitt Socey   they/them

So you wanted to know more about me? I'm glad <3

Among other things, I am a trans artist. It so happens that I think about much of my work in theatre in trans-prefixed words:

Transformation is the defining feature of theatre as a medium.

Translation is the core action of my work as a theatre collaborator.

Transition is a thread I find myself pulling on in all my work.

Theatre inherently asks the audience to play a part in transforming what they see before them into some thing/place/body else. There is a magic in seeing a transformation before your own eyes. It is because of this magic that I love story theatre and related theatrical forms. For me, the best theatre invites audience to bring themselves to the story. They become co-creators as they fill in the blanks of the world. I am drawn to lighting design in part because it is a design area which can transform a space or figure with minimal intervention.

Translation is the one-to-one communication of an idea from one form to another. As a director, I am translating my vision into words that land with my collaborators. I use my tools as a storyteller to translate a text written for one moment/audience/place into a piece that can resonate with the audience I have in this moment. I see my work as a lighting designer as akin to that of a cinematographer - I translate angle and proportion into an environment. The work of directing focus and creating a tone is something I recognize in the director's work and reinforce with lighting, an act of translation in a more abstract sense.

When I try to find common threads between the array of stories I am drawn to, I tend to come around to discussing transition. I use the word broadly, as a short-hand for the fact that the only constant in life is change. I am so compelled by the ways our experiences of time and transitions/endings are shaped by the stories we hold about the moment we are currently in.

If you were looking for a Biographical Blurb, a version is:

I come from an actor/director/educator mom and cinephile/blues-loving/journalist dad. The Indianapolis theatre scene was my first love, the internet was my second, and freelancing might be the third.

Substack Blog

I have a substack. I do not post on there with any schedule.

I try to keep it fairly focused on creative insight/discovery. Some personal elements sneak in because I am a person after all.

I don't edit it.

I'm notorious for editing myself as a write, so on my substack I practice just typing and not getting in the way of myself.

There used to be a big 'ole embed here and then they changed the formatting and I haven't figured out how to make their new embed system work, so instead HERE IS A GOOD OLD-FASHIONED LINK
